Smarter Thinking™ was founded in 2008 by two educators who saw the high level of anxiety felt by teachers and students caused by the increasing weight held by standardized assessments.

The idea was born several years ago in a 5th grade classroom in New Jersey. The teacher felt that students would benefit from some fun and relaxation prior to taking the state assessment. Maybe if they were less anxious, they would perform better on the test!

“Magical” tools were given to the students in order to make them laugh and feel as though something was helping them with smarter thinking on the test. Although the students were old enough to know otherwise, these products seemed to ease the tension and make the test taking less tedious. This was a success in and of itself.

Since that time, these “magical” tools have been used consistently for standardized testing, and have become smart stuff for smarter thinking.

In 2010 on the NJ ASK:

  • 40.3% of 3rd Graders were Partially Proficient in Language Arts Literacy.
  • 21.9% of 3rd Graders were Partially Proficient in Math.
  • 40.4% of 4th Graders were Partially Proficient in Language Arts Literacy.
  • 23% of 4th Graders were Partially Proficient in Math.

Do you think some of your students who scored Partially Proficient did so due to test anxiety? We do! We can help!
